The Cheers magazine guidelines
The Cheers magazine is re-launching with slightly different format and concept. Main focus areas are going to be politics, entertainment & world affairs. We have a new set of sections ready to go, all with new names or new 100% contents. With these changes we are trying to improve the quality of The Cheers magazine and focus it just a bit better. While the exact focus as well as slogan is still circling in our minds, irony and strong research on topics, as well as selling headlines and well-chosen topics and well-written articles is what we are after. Requirements for all articles We have set the main guidelines that every single article should follow. These are brought out below. Additionally, there are requirements / guidelines / suggestions for all sections individually. Topics While we all love to write about our lives, give our thoughts and write blog-alike opinions, let’s leave all that for blogs. The topics that you choose for your articles need to attract interest from a wide range of people. This means that the topics need to be engaging not only to you, but also to your neighbor and a random person interested in what’s happening in the world and why. Titles In addition to the topic itself, your article title / headline is what decides whether your article will be read or not. Your article title needs to 1) say what the article is about and 2) do it in a selling way. You might not like the gutter press mentality here, but it’s a fact that in order for your article to get read, you do need a damn great title for it. Things to think about when writing a title for your article • Does it say what the article is (at least almost) about? • Does it leave people thinking what might be inside the article? (that’s a good thing, btw) • Do you think it sells your article, would you click on such headline yourself? (considering you probably see the headline in google OR on some random site where you just got by mistake) • Do you think the headline is attractive enough to invite others to click on the title? • Is it interesting? • Would that type of title make you want to share the article with your friends? • Would it be easy to take that headline and promote the article in the internet on other sites? Intros The introduction is meant for promotional purposes only; it will not be included inside the article itself. The article intro is another selling tool at your disposal. It should be short, shouldn’t be more than just a few sentences (1-3 sentences is perfect). Things to think about when writing an intro • Does the introduction say what the article is about? • Does it sell the article with the first 2 sentences? • Can the intro part be used to promote the article on other sites? • Does it create the interest towards reading the article? Length Right now the articles should all be between 500-1000 words. Exceptions apply, but you’ll need to get in touch with us to discuss. The Article Depending on the topic and the section, these things vary, but in simple words, your article itself should consist of 4 main parts. 1. First paragraph should set up the main idea of the article or your main argument. Some background information and if available, say why you know about it and are qualified to talk about this topic as well. And/or why the reader should care about the topic. 2. Now you could approach the other side of the argument (if it’s that type of article). If your reader doesn’t agree with your point, this is the time the reader can say “hey, now you’re talking” and this often makes the article a lot more interesting for the reader. 3. And now go into details, talk about a few main points of your argument, bring examples and so on. 4. Your conclusion Extras In our new format we will want to see extracts for most of the articles, and subheadings are always good. We will also want 2-4 article urls on the same topic. The articles can be from The Cheers magazine or from some other publication. We are not here just for ourselves but we want to do our best to cater to the reader, thus related articles are important. Pictures will be highly appreciated as well as they will be used on the front page as well as section pages. The Cheers Sections & individual section guidelines You’ll notice that our new sections have a bit of unconventional names. They have been decided on like that on purpose and hopefully will get people to check these sections out just for their weird names in some cases. Pictures will be highly appreciated as well as they will be used on the front page as well as section pages. Section: InterAction / Buster (name not chosen yet) Whatever the name will be, this is basically the entertainment section. As a main thing we should have some great selling pieces here. Types of articles Most of the articles in this section should be i.e. „10 best...", „10 worst", „7 most unbelievable...", „The most stupid quotes by politicians", „10 most ridiculous celebrities", „101 things...", “What if George Bush actually was God” and so on. Section: Flipside The flipside category is a bit different from other sections, it won’t be publishing one article after another but rather each Flipside consists of 3 different articles. You take a topic which has strong opinions on opposite sides and then either find one person from both sides to write an article from their point of view or you write those two articles yourself based on your conversations or interviews with those people. And the third article should consist of the same questions to both people and your own ironical comments in the center of the page (this article will be published as a 3-column page, your comments in the middle). It can also contain articles on not so strong topics, yet very different opinions – i.e. male vs. female view on it. In some cases no actual conversations or interviews are required, if an extensive research is done on the topic; but often real-life-people give something extra. Potential topics Religion vs. No religion, McCain vs. Obama; Socialism vs. Capitalism; Jung vs. Freud; England/The English vs. France/the French; Russia vs. everybody else; Tycho BRahe vs. Copernicus; right to choose vs. right to life. Section: Inter View This section is dedicated to interviews, either real or made-up ironical conversations with different known personalities. In some cases the person doesn’t necessarily need to be known IF he has managed to done something really worth mentioning. Potential topics The options are endless really, your imagination is your only barrier. Imaginary interviews from Pamela Anderson to Napoleon and real interviews from Satanist supporters to the editor of The Onion magazine. Section: In the Ring This is the politics section that should be covering not only US politics, but politics around the world – from “democracy” in Zimbabwe to the political impact of Carla Bruni to the French president and “free” elections in Russia. Section: Nice Try Nice try is here to recognize the good and great things being done in the world. Whether it’s a great and popular website, a book worth mentioning, concert with unimaginable fireworks, TV show that really matter or anything else, this is the section to cover it. We can give out web badges / awards to the best in our opinion. Section: The Agora What are we all thinking about daily bases? Well, hopefully not too much though, but one thing always in our minds unfortunately is money. Here we talk about money, about business, talk about the rise and the fall of an airline; ways to survive in this world; weird business ideas that just might work. Section: The Orbit Formerly known as Opinion or Life section. In here we want to see strong opinion articles as well as life-articles on great topics with great style. An example topic/headline from the past – “My son wants to get married, so we are going window shopping for a wife”. |
